Worker crushed by rubbish truck

2009-09-16 00:00

AN Msunduzi Municipality worker was killed in freak accident when he fell off a rubbish truck late yesterday afternoon in Napierville.

Phathezakhe Andries Kheswa (31), from the Vulindlela area, fell off the compartment behind the cab of the truck, where rubbish collectors normally sit on their rounds.

ER24’s Derek Banks said Kheswa fell off the truck while it was reversing and was run over by it. He died on the scene.

Kheswa’s colleagues told The Witness that the truck was reversing on an incline in Aalwyn Road into an adjoining road. Kheswa fell off and the truck crushed his head with its front left tyre, they said.

Kheswa’s colleagues were immediately taken for trauma counselling at one of the municipality’s clinics.

Kheswa started working for the municipality in 2005. His colleagues described him as a quiet and kind man, who enjoyed his work.

Deputy municipal manager for community services, Zwe Hulane, whose department is also in charge of the refuse collection section, passed on condolences on behalf of the municipality to Kheswa’s family and his colleagues.

He said at the scene that the circumstances surrounding Kheswa’s death could not have been foreseen.
