Workers picket at uMngeni Hospital

2010-03-31 00:00

WORKERS at uMngeni Hospital in Howick yesterday picketed at the hospital, protesting its poor management. They claimed that the Health Department is managing the hospital like a spaza shop.

A source at the hospital said many critical posts have been left vacant as the department has placed a moratorium on all the posts.

“We decided to engage in a protest after we realised that the department was seriously neglecting the hospital. Since 2007, we have been without a CEO, and to date we have had three people acting as CEO; the hospital is being run like a spaza shop.”

The source said that besides the critical vacant posts, there are many other staff shortages that are affecting services at the hospital.

Attempts to contact the Health Department were unsuccessful.
