World Cup: ‘red carpet’ for tourists to KZN

2010-04-12 00:00

WITH about two months left before South Africa hosts the Fifa 2010 World Cup, the province of KwaZulu-Natal is set to roll out an innovative programme aimed at giving tourists and fans visiting the province the “red-carpet treatment”.

According to Economic Development and Tourism Department spokesman Bheko Madlala, this initiative, known as “Tourist Buddies”, forms part of strategies to improve service excellence during the soccer spectacle and beyond.

“This bold initiative will see employees working at service stations, in the hospitality industry, at fast-food outlets, car guarding and from all other sectors that interface with tourists, being trained so that they can assist and provide information to tourists,” Madlala said.

Madlala said the programme will be unveiled today at a function to be held at the Hilton Hotel in Durban.

“As part of the programme, companies involved in the tourism sectors will partner with the department to improve service delivery and to ensure that the province becomes a tourist Mecca.”

Madlala said the initiative forms part of a basket of measures that will be unveiled by Economic Development and Tourism MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu during his budget policy speech in the provincial legislature tomorrow. These measures are in line with the department’s strategy to attract tourists to the province and to ensure they are given top-drawer treatment during their stay.
