Wounded rhino slowly limps back to health

THE white rhino that survived Saturday’s attack on three rhinos by poachers at the private Tala Game Reserve gave her keepers a scare when rangers could not find her for two days.

However, their fears were allayed late yesterday when she was finally tracked down after an intensive air and ground search.

Relieved head ranger at Tala, Divan Vermaak, said the wounded rhino — whose horns were hacked off in the attack at the weekend — was concealed in thick bush but had been to drink water. The other two rhinos that were darted in the attack died.

“She looked quite lively, which is a great relief. We didn’t approach her too closely as we don’t want to pressure her because she is still afraid,” he said, adding a vet will examine and treat the rhino again today.

Meanwhile, The Witness was told police are still following up leads in connection with the incident in which three rhinos were darted and dehorned in broad daylight in the reserve, which was teeming with day visitors on Saturday morning.

No arrests have been made.
