Writers' Parliament at the Time of the Writer Festival

2008-03-26 00:00

THE Time of the Writer Festival, currently running in Durban, hosts a unique experimental event entitled Writers’ Parliament: Notes Towards a Cultural Policy for Literature in Durban, on Friday.

The festival, with the co-operation of Ethekwini Municipality, opens the doors of the council chambers of the city hall to both festival and Durban-based writers, who will discuss policies and formulate strategies for the promotion of literature in the city. The event begins with an address by Breyten Breytenbach speaking on the idea of parliament and the importance of citizen engagement and debate.

Then, in the first sitting, the writers will outline both the value of literature for a society and some of the challenges facing literature. The second sitting will see participants make concrete proposals towards a cultural policy for literature in Durban.

The parliament will take place between 9.30 am and 1 pm in the council hambers on the first floor of the city hall, and is open to the public.
