X-ray delays at Port Shepstone hospital

2010-10-25 00:00

PATIENTS are reportedly experiencing difficulties in having certain types of X-rays conducted at Port Shepstone Provincial Hospital.

Several people have approached The Witness saying they have been turned away or were advised to go to private hospitals for X-rays unless they can come back in January.

A woman from the Annerley retirement village who did not want to be named said she went to the out-patients department and needed an X-ray of her kidneys and lower stomach.

“I was told I could only have it done in January next year. Obviously it is serious and I can’t wait until then,” she said.

“I was told to go to a private hospital as they could not refer me to another hospital, which I find very worrying.”

Another woman went for a mammogram and was told that the hospital was not able to do the procedure because there was no radiologist available.

It is believed that the hospital’s only radiologist has resigned and that services have been cut back. A comment is awaited from the hospital.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Saturday that the country’s heathcare services are “destructive, unsustainable and expensive.” The minister was addressing the national congress of the Democratic Nursing Organisation of SA in Bela Bela, Limpopo. He said he is also concerned that 86% of the population do not have medical aid.
