YMCA to provide necessities for disadvantaged Comrades runners at no charge

2010-04-20 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg YMCA will provide accommodation and nutritious food at no charge for disadvantaged runners during the Comrades Marathon this year.

It will form part of the Comrades Marathon Association’s Disadvantaged Runners Programme, which aims to help 1 000 runners during the race on May 30.

“The Comrades Marathon is regarded as an exceptional challenge, but we recognise that for many of our runners, the greatest struggle is overcoming poverty and simply to get to the starting line,” said the association’s Thami Vilakazi.

The YMCA will provide shelter, beds, blankets, ablution facilities and substantial meals on May 29 and 30.

There will be transport from the Bonitas Comrades Expo in Durban at 6 pm on May 29, to the Pietermaritzburg YMCA, and from the finish back to the YMCA.

While there is no charge for the facility, the programme can only accommodate 1 000 runners, and eligible runners must apply before April 30 to:
