Yachting set to pick up on Saturday

2009-01-15 00:00

YACHT racing at Midmar seems to be going through a lean patch at present.

HMYC were scheduled to hold their pursuit race on Saturday afternoon, and although the weather was overcast with the threat of rain, a fresh south-easterly was blowing that would have made for good racing.

However, only two brave stalwarts made themselves available — club commodore Tony Cockerill, who was set to sail a Laser instead of his beloved Hunter Odin’s Eye, and Georg Muller and his crew on their L26 Keeler.

A pursuit race is always lots of fun. The slowest yacht starts first, followed in order of boat handicap, with the fastest taking off last. After the pursuit, first over the line takes the prize.

It is hoped there will be a major turnout of all classes for the fourth race in the Partington Plate Trophy race this Saturday. A skipper’s briefing is scheduled for 1.30 pm at HMYC. The race officer will be Elspeth Gray.

Radio sailors have also been enjoying a quiet time over the holidays but will be in action at HMYC on Saturday afternoon. An R36 Shipmate Class League Race will be held, starting at 2 pm.
