Yende sad to sit out big Chiefs challenge

2012-10-25 00:00

MARITZBURG United attacking midfielder Mthokozisi Yende is gutted that he is unavailable for tomorrow night’s PSL clash with his former club and Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs at Harry Gwala stadium, according to United chairperson Farouk Kadodia.

Yende, who has just started to settle at the club in his role just behind the striker, is still suspended following his sending off in the league victory over Chippa United on October 5. But while disappointed at missing out tomorrow night, the 28-year-old has team-mates who know the importance of the fixture.

“Yende is in a lot of pain because it is a game that he would have loved to be a part of,” Kadodia told The Witness yesterday. “But the team knows how important the match is to him and they will rally together to get the result.”

The atmosphere at the stadium is set to be electric and club officials confirmed yesterday that all 10 000 tickets have been sold. There will be no tickets available at the gate and anybody without tickets has been advised to stay away from the ground to avoid disappointment.

“It is the first time we have ever sold out the stadium two days before a game, so we are very pleased about that,” added Kadodia. “We desperately need the 12th man in the stands and with the run of home games we have coming up, their continued support will be very important to our chances.”

Any match against Chiefs is important, but this one a little more so given that United will move to within two points of the top of the table with a victory.

“Three points here would be a massive morale booster for the squad,” said Kadodia, who added that United’s impressive start this season is largely due to coach Ernst Middendorp’s shrewd purchases in the transfer market.

“If you look at the players that have come in this season, he [Middendorp] has had a major part in that,” said Kadodia. “It is a small squad, but it has been managed very well.”

The good news for United is that, apart from Yende, a full squad is avaliable for selection tomorrow night, while the skillful playmaker will be back available for United’s Telkom Knockout clash against SuperSport United next weekend.

Tomorrow’s match kicks off at 8 pm and will be televised on SuperSport Four.
