Yeye nears 50-cap milestone as international footballer

2014-11-14 00:00

HE is just one cap away from 50 — a significant milestone for any international footballer — but Reneilwe Letsholonyane is fully focused on securing three invaluable points for Bafana Bafana in their 2015 Afcon qualifier against Sudan in Durban tomorrow.

Yeye, as he is affectionately known in the football community, was a regular in previous coach Gordon Igesund’s team.

But under Shakes Mashaba, the easily recognisable Letsholonyane has had to be content with a place on the sidelines thanks to the dominant central midfield pairing of Dean Furman and Andile Jali.

Left out of the Bafana squad that travelled to and beat Sudan before coming home to draw with Nigeria in early September, Letsholonyane was recalled for the next leg of qualifiers as a result of his glittering form for Kaizer Chiefs.

Though he is not expected to start tomorrow, the playmaker is as determined as anybody to secure qualification.

“We have two games that we are left with. As a team we are taking each game as it comes. We have Sudan and we know that it won’t be easy.

“But we are working hard at training with our coach and technical team to try and seal it this weekend,” he said.

We miss him as a brother, as a team-mate and our captain. But there is nothing we can do to bring him back. What’s left is for us is to go out there on Saturday and do our best in his memory.
