Young PMB pilot on an epic voyage

2014-05-03 00:00

A YOUNG Pietermaritzburg commercial pilot will today complete a week-long voyage that has taken him across four countries while making his way to the city from New Zealand.

Former Maritzburg College boy Mark Dixon (23), son of Comrades Marathon board luminary Dave Dixon, and senior pilot Berry Wilson are expected to land in South Africa today following a week of flying.

The two had gone to New Zealand to collect an eight-seater King Air 90 bought by local company Tekwani Sawmills.

They left New Zealand last Friday and have flown to other parts of the world including Australia, the Maldives, and Seychelles in making their way to South Africa. They were expected to fly to Mozambique last night and South Africa today.

Lawrence Hoatson of Tekwani Sawmills said should the plane not be kept at King Shaka Airport for customs checks, they expect the pilots to land in Pietermaritzburg today.

He described Dixon as a very good pilot. “The pilot in command of the plane is Berry Wilson and Dixon wanted to go along for the experience … He is a very good pilot.”

Dave Dixon said he and his family were proud of Mark’s achievement. “He is on the threshold of a very good career,” he said, adding his son was qualified to fly commercial planes carrying up to 12 passengers.
