Young bowlers find new mentor

2009-08-27 00:00

FINALLY, after a year of being left out in the cold, the Natal Inland Under 25 players have someone to ensure that they are represented in the Inter-districts next year.

Frank Taggart of Collegians Bowling Club has volunteered his services and will try to ensure that the youngsters get all the support they need.

Their first practice for the year will be at Collegians Bowling Club on Sunday at 1.30 pm. All registered under-25 players are invited to attend as are new aspiring junior bowlers. For details, contact Frank Taggart at 072 492 7367.

The Spec Savers All Natal Men’s and Women’s Singles were completed in Durban and Pietermaritzburg respectively last Sunday. The men’s Champion for 2009 is Bruce Makkink of RDLI while the women’s champion is Ingrid Basson of Hillcrest. In the finals, Makkink defeated Brendan Ainley Maritzburg Bowling Club while Basson defeated Nan Roos of Dundee. In the play-offs for third and fourth place, Mike Hattingh PMB Collegians beat Jimmy Clark Hillary while Helen Grundlingh Amanzimtoti beat Marinda Opperman of Maritzburg West.

The Natal Inland selectors remind all players who have been selected for the Masters and Preliminary Masters Singles that they need to confirm their availability with either Nan Foss (for women, at 082 378 0811) or Royden James at 082 577 4071 before August 31. All squad members, men and women, are required to attend the squad meeting to be held at Maritzburg Bowling Club on Wednesday, September 9, at 5.30 pm.
