2009-05-22 00:00

COMRADES Marathon dominates the athletics this weekend with tomorrow morning’s National Youth Run the only other event on the calendar. This event is open to runners and walkers of all ages, offering both the five-kilometre and 10-kilometre distances and the opportunity to experience the camaraderie of the Comrades Marathon.

There is over R60 000 in prize money which is split between incentives for the five schools who have the most finishers and the leading 10 individual finishers of the 10 kilometres between 15 and 19 years of age. The first 3 000 finishers in the 10-kilometre race will receive T-shirts and finishers in both events will earn commemorative medals. The top ten will get gold, those under one hour in the 10-kilometre race earn silver and the remainder bronze. All five-kilometre finishers will receive copper medals.

The events are held from Riverside Sports Centre in Durban North, (at Glenwood AC grounds), from 9 am (five-kilometre 9.15 am) but entries will not be take on race day. Pre-entry is available today and tomorrow at the Comrades House in Connaught Street or at the Comrades Expo in Durban. There will be a special guest appearance by race patron and kwaito star Kabelo, who will also be running the Comrades Marathon on Sunday.
