Zakumi coin launched in Durban

2009-06-27 00:00

A SPECIAL gold coin depicting Zakumi, the official mascot of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, was launched at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban yesterday.

The coin is part of a special collection by the South African Mint to commemorate the World Cup.

Ethekwini Mayor Obed Mlaba, city manager Michael Sutcliffe and South African Coin Mint members helped to strike a coin at the launch.

The coin collection was launched in 2006 with a gold quarter-ounce and R2 silver coin for the 2006 German World Cup.

Another coin was added in 2008 to celebrate the 2010 South African World Cup.

The 2009 coins will feature Zakumi in different poses.

One of the silver coins in the series has been designed with recesses and four small steel balls.

The coin owner can score his or her own “goals” by rotating the coin. Such a coin has never been minted before.

The coins will also be the first coins in the world to depict soccer stadiums.
