Zulu royal’s 4x4 in fatal accident

2008-04-02 00:00

Durban police are searching for the driver of a luxury 4x4 owned by a Zulu royal that collided with a bakkie full of churchgoers at the weekend.

One of the 12 people injured in the crash has subsequently died.

Paramedics and a member of the Durban Metro Police who was waiting at the intersection saw someone run away from the accident scene.

Nonkululeko Mbatha, a spokeswoman for the KZN Transport MEC, confirmed that the BMW X5 involved in the accident belongs to Prince Sifiso Zulu, a member of the Zulu royal house and a prominent businessman.

Mbatha said Zulu was at a meeting at the time of the accident and was later summoned to the accident scene. He told police that someone else was using the vehicle, she said.

Police spokesman Inspector Michael Read said police are looking for the driver of the X5, who has been identified.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened and other charges could be added later, Read said.
