Zuma: Madiba’s condition is critical

2013-06-24 00:00

THE presidency last night announced that the condition of former president Nelson Mandela was critical. President Jacob Zuma met with Graça Machel to discuss the ailing elder statesman’s health yesterday and was also briefed by his medical team, presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve, and are ensuring that Madiba is well looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,” said Zuma.

Zuma also said that when the ambulance that took Mandela to hospital broke down, “all care was taken to ensure that his medical condition was not compromised”.

“There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care. The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff, including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses,” said Zuma. He also dismissed media reports that Mandela had suffered cardiac arrest. Zuma appealed to the nation and the world to pray for Mandela, his family and the medical team attending to him. — WR.
