Zuma to open ‘African Dream’ stadium Soccer City

2010-05-22 00:00

THE 94 700-seater World Cup final venue, Soccer City, will be opened today with the Nedbank Cup final between AmaZulu and Wits University.

Soccer City is the last of the 10 World Cup final venues to be opened.

President Jacob Zuma will open the stadium and Bafana Bafana are expected to receive a rousing reception when they make an appearance.

Shaped in the form of a calabash, the stadium will play host to the opening game of the World Cup between Bafana Bafana and Mexico on June 11, and the final on July 11.

Altogether, Soccer City will host five first-round games, a second-round game, a quarter-final and the final. It will also stage Bafana’s friendly warmup match against Colombia on Thursday, before being handed over to Fifa.

The cladding on the outside of Africa’s biggest stadium is a mosaic of earthen colours with a ring of lights running around the bottom of the structure, simulating fire underneath a pot. No spectator will be more than 100 m from the action.

South African songstress Vicky Sampson will set the scene today with her hit song My African Dream.

The match kicks off at 3 pm and will be televised live on SABC1, SuperSport HD and SuperSport4.
