Zuma’s comparison ‘ridiculous’

2014-10-21 00:00

CAPE TOWN — President Jacob Zuma’s questioning why there is such a brouhaha about Nkandla “when government built an airport for P.W. Botha at George”, has been met with disbelief.

Wouter Kritzinger, a member of the provincial council for George from 1970 to 1980, said it was a ridiculous comparison. He said Botha was minister of defence when the airport was built to service the increasing needs of the southern Cape.

He said the P.W. Botha airport is a national asset today, which serves thousands of passengers, while Nkandla is already a symbol of a corrupt government whose members enrich themselves at the cost of the poor.

Kritzinger recalled Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay were investigated as possible towns to host the new airport, but the former was too close to mountains and the latter had too much fog. He said the only ruling Botha had made concerning the airport at George was when he called in Kritzinger to start co-ordinating roads to the airport with the provincial authority. “There was a road to Herolds Bay where the runway is today. It had to be moved. That Botha had ordered an airport to be built [in George], is nonsense.”
