award: durban author backed gender equality

2008-10-22 00:00

Durbanite Lauretta Ngcobo will be among those honoured at the National Orders ceremony in Pretoria next week.

She was nominated for her achievements in the field of literature.

Through her literacy work, she championed the cause of gender equality in South Africa.

Ngcobo told The Witness yesterday she was surprised by the nomination, yet very excited.

“I wrote under difficult conditions in exile, having to raise children away from home on my own,” she said.

Ngcobo has four published books, which deal with the struggles of rural women during the apartheid era, whom she said fought valiant battles that landed many in prison.

Ngcobo has travelled extensively around Africa, Europe and America, where she has addressed women in lectures and gatherings.
