2012-05-08 00:00

WATER in eThekwini is rated the fourth cleanest in South Africa, just 0,18% behind Ekuhurleni, which according to the 2012 National Blue Drop Water Quality Assessment report has the country’s cleanest water.

Releasing the report in Cape Town yesterday, Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said the SA’s tap water remains among the best in the world.

“The report of 2012 shows significant improvements, which serve as evidence of the positive impact this incentive-based regulation approach is having on the South African water sector,” she said.

“The first Blue Drop report of 2009 indicated that the national microbiological compliance for South African tap water was measured at 93,3%. This has increased to 97,3% in the 2012 reporting cycle.”

The eThekwini metro is KwaZulu-Natal’s only municipality rated among the top 10, coming fourth with 98,77% compliance.

Msunduzi Municipality came in at number 20, having scored 95,38%, while uMgungundlovu District was 34th, with 92,42%.

The Ugu District on the South Coast came in at 31 with a slightly higher 92,55% score in microbiological compliance.

The three top scorers are in Gauteng: Ekuhurleni (98,95%), City of Johannesburg (98,92%) and Mogale City Local Municipality (98,79%).
