fraud case: accused stand trial for false life insurance claim

2008-04-01 00:00

Two men and two women, including the owner of KZN Funeral Parlour, Alex Chuka Zuma (48) of Northdale, appeared before a Pietermaritzburg magistrate yesterday charged with defrauding Liberty Life of R20 000 by lodging a false life insurance claim on February 27 this year.

Prosecutor N. Harripersadh told the court that it is alleged the accused pretended to the insurance company that one of the accused, Siyabonga Luthuli (29), had died and lodged a claim against his life insurance policy.

“As you can see, he is alive and well,” he told the magistrate.

He said the four accused were arrested by members of the Organised Crime Unit and the offence is allegedly linked to the work of a syndicate.

Zuma, Luthuli and a woman, Nomkhosi Happiness Dlamini (23), were each granted bail of R3 000, by magistrate V.B. Zwane.

The prosecution said the police still have to check on details relating to a fourth accused, Thandi Lorrain Zondi (44) of Sweetwaters.

The case was postponed until April 9.
