fraud: health dept official in court

2011-02-16 00:00

A SECURITY manager from the Health Department, Lucky Innocent Dlamini (41), appeared in the magistrate’s court here yesterday in connection with a charge that he defrauded the department of R88 000 between June 29 and September 20, last year.

Dlamini, who lives in Hilton, was not asked to plead to the charge. He was granted bail of R2 000 by Magistrate Bessie du Preez.

The case was postponed to March 30.

The charge sheet alleges that Dlamini defrauded the department and/or Jacobus Britz by signing false order forms for payment in respect of goods, services and equipment that were never rendered or delivered.

Department spokesperson Chris Maxon said in a statement yesterday that Dlamini was arrested by the SA Police Force commercial crimes unit when he arrived at the department for a disciplinary hearing following his suspension over “transgressions related to fraud and corruption”.

Maxon said the department has intensified its anti-fraud and corruption efforts since 2009 and to date a number of senior officials have either been fired, resigned and/or been arrested. — WR.
