get an ichthyic pedicure with ‘fish therapy’

2011-08-19 00:00

FRESH-WATER fish gently nibbling on one’s feet is the basis for a unique new spa therapy business in Pietermaritzburg.

In the mini-complex in 105 Victoria Road, Garra Rufa Spa uses “fish therapy”. Customers immerse their feet in a special tank filled with Garra Rufa fish, which secrete an enzyme that is known to assist with skin regeneration.

It is the first such spa in Pietermaritzburg, although there are several in Durban.

The owners are husband-and-wife team Zaheer and Farhana Yusuf. Shaeeda Cassim is the manager.

They say the benefits of the spa are exfoliation, reflexology, improved blood circulation and rejuvenation of feet.

They first saw the therapy being used in a television programme and tested it themselves. Before deciding to invest in the franchise they questioned the hygiene.

They learned that the “ichthyic pedicure” was first used in Turkey and has a proven track record, and they satisfied themselves there is no risk of transmitting diseases.

The spa maintains a strict water management regime, using a dual filtration system to clean the water in the tank, which is maintained at a toasty 32°C.

The spa also offers a range of personal healthcare products for hands and feet.
