ka Plaatjie appointed to board

2012-01-17 00:00

FORMER Pan Africanist Congress secretary-general Thami ka Plaatjie has been appointed to the SABC board and will serve as its new deputy chairperson.

The appointment by President Jacob Zuma was widely expected after last year’s parliamentary interview process where he was short-listed. He fills the vacancy that was filled by Peter Harris who resigned amid infighting in the board.

Reached for comment yesterday, Ka Plaatjie described his new post as a “big challenge” and said the SABC had for too long been the subject of negative headlines because of its internal challenges.

“I hope to work with the team and also tap into their experience … to turn things around. The SABC cannot fail.”

Ka Plaatjie quit the PAC in 2008, forming the Pan Africanist Movement, which was routed in the national election a year later. A few months later he quit as its president ahead of the party’s first policy conference, citing personal reasons. He later joined the ANC.

President Jacob Zuma yesterday wished Ka Plaatjie well and said he was confident he would serve to the best of his ability.
