king shaka: planes sent back because of mist

2011-11-18 00:00

HUNDREDS of passengers were delayed when King Shaka International Airport turned back some flights due to bad weather yesterday.

But it could have been worse had the airport handled more than one international flight a day. Emirates is the only international airline which flies daily from the airport.

“Nine planes returned to where they had departed, which caused a 12-hour delay, at least,” said Shaka International Airport spokesperson Collin Naidoo.

Naidoo said it is the first time the airport has been forced to stop flights due to weather.

“I think when it comes to weather even the biggest airports in the world are at the mercy of the uncontrollable. We are not running at full capacity, which does the make the situation easier to manage.”

Naidoo said King Shaka International is considered by other major airports as a clearing port. “When there is bad weather often other planes will park here and wait until the weather clears up before flying to their destinations. It is therefore important to always have vacant parking lots for such emergencies.”
