kwaDukuza: armed gang bust in pre-dawn swoop

2013-03-26 00:00

FOLLOWING a tip-off from the public, the kwaDukuza Crime Prevention Unit raided and arrested a four-man gang in the early hours of yesterday.

The four, aged 22 to 29, were allegedly found with an LG notebook and a wristwatch that are thought to have been stolen.

A firearm, some ammunition and two knives were also seized in the raid.

It is suspected that the firearm and ammunition might have been stolen by the gang.

The tip-off followed a spate of property crimes that has plagued the area for some time.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said it was ironic that the raid had happened at about 4 am, when most burglars are known to prey on their sleeping victims.

This time it was the robbers themselves who were caught sleeping.

The four have been charged with possession of stolen goods and one of them has been charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They are due to appear in court today.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, praised the kwaDukuza Crime Prevention Unit members for their diligence in tackling crime in the area.
