kwaMashu ‘Idols’ winner was streets ahead

2012-10-10 00:00

KHAYA Mthethwa seemed destined to win season eight of Idols from the moment he performed for the judges at the auditions at uShaka Marine World in Durban.

And with the release of the voting statistics by M-Net and Mzansi Magic yesterday, it’s clear to see he was streets ahead with the viewers as well.

Mthethwa, who hails from kwaMashu, received the most votes during the top 18 phase of the reality show, during which he competed against nine other male singers for a place in the top 10. He received 49,36% of the vote, with his nearest rival, Simphiwe Gwegwe receiving 14,40%. Once through to the top 10, KwaZulu-Natal’s golden boy was voted top in every single round.

He scored his lowest percentage following the top nine spectacular with 29,73%, but in the final won a massive 80,20% of the vote. His rival Melissa Allison received 19,80%.

More than nine million votes were cast in season eight, compared with 8,4 million last year. Some 2,9 million votes were cast in the final alone. To avoid syndicated voting, votes were limited to 100 per voting period on Mxit and SMS and to one per hour on the website and mobi-site.
