kwaMashu crime spree

2013-09-20 00:00

THE latest crime statistics showed that 120 people were murdered in kwaMashu between April 2012 and March 2013.

In 2010, the township made headlines in the country for having the highest murder rate after 300 murders were registered in the April 2008 to March 2009 crime statistics.

The current statistics show an increase of six from last year’s 114. There were also more attempted murder cases, with 124 revealed in yesterday’s statistics compared to the 100 reported last year.

Other crimes such as sexual crimes, common assault, and robbery proved to be declining, according to the latest figures.

Chairperson of the area community policing forum (CPF) Mbuso Sobede said the crime rate was fluctuating in the area. “Feuds between political factions hugely contributed to the high number of murders as incidents of shooting were prevalent,” Sobede said.

He said the Community Police Forums had started implementing a social crime prevention programme as a preventative measure that sought to educate and mobilise the community to co-operate in the fight against crime.
