nightclub: teenage girl found dead in bush

2011-04-13 00:00

THE body of a 16-year-old girl was found in the bush on Monday evening, only hours after she was seen at a nightclub in Pietermaritzburg.

The body of Nokulunga Memela was found in the bush near a bridge along Gambu Road in Dambuza area of Edendale at about 5 pm. She had bruises to her face and signs of strangulation on her neck.

She was last seen alive at nearby Ntshiza tavern when she was drinking and dancing with a group of friends on Sunday night.

Said Zama Mkhize (21), a resident, “At about 1 pm on Sunday a woman was heard crying. Then on Monday at about 5 pm young children who were playing soccer, found her body. I’m very scared because I also love night life and frequent nightclub such as Ntshiza.”

Zimkile Zondi (58) said her late granddaughter was often out of the house. She said she was living in different homesteads in the neighbourhood.

“I last saw her last Saturday [April 2], and she greeted me nicely before she walked away. Before that I last saw her months ago,” said Zondi.

Zondi said she took it hard when shesaw Nokulunga’s motionless body at about 5.30 pm.

“I was talking to my grandson when a man came in and told me that a woman’s body has been found.

“I went to inspect, but I could not identify the body,” she said.

“I came back home to start cooking, but few minutes later another man came in to tell me that the body belongs to Sca [Nokulunga’s nickname].

“I went back to inspect it, but only to find that the body looked darker than that of Sca, who was light in complexion. It was when her friend identified her that I started to believe. But I still ask myself who killed her and why,” she said.

She said Nokulunga’s mother also left home years ago.

“Nokulunga has been always living anywhere she wanted to live. She lived the same lifestyle as her mother,” she said.

A neighbour said she once shared a house with Nokulunga and a boyfriend.

“She and her boyfriend moved out to another house in this area,” said the neighbour.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said no arrest has been made.

She urged anyone who might have information to call Colonel Gops Govender at 033 398 9752 or 082 779 7141.

Anonymous callers should call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
