uMhlathuze Municipality joins Eskom’s energy-saving campaign

2012-12-07 00:00

UMHLATHUZE Municipality became the first local municipality to partner with Eskom’s energy-saving 49M campaign yesterday.

49M is an initiative that is supported by the government and business partners, and promotes energy savings of at least 10% by each household in the country.

The campaign, which is said to have reached 30 000 South Africans, was launched last year as a response to the country’s constrained power system, climate change and the recent economic downturn.

Eskom east grid manager Mphiliseni Mthimkhulu said: “Energy efficiency is a challenge for all of us, so we all have to deploy serious efforts to keep the lights on and ensure that the wheels of our economy continue to turn.” Mthimkhulu urged people to switch off all lights and appliances not in use.

He emphasised that power-saving endeavours should not be done on a short-term basis only.

Mayor Elphas Mbatha said the municipality has pledged to analyse long-term energy-saving, appoint dedicated energy managers and drive behavioural change through staff awareness and education campaigns.
