uMhlathuze run offers a nature-friendly course

2008-10-24 00:00

UMHLATHUZE Athletic Club host their annual Tonevale Game farm 16 km race from Wallenton Farm tomorrow afternoon, commencing at 3 pm.

The route is run around the Tonevale Game Ranch, staying on sand roads close to the perimeter fence and undulating through thorn bush and grasslands, with part of the route including a stretch beside the uMhlathuze river. This has to be one of the more scenic and nature-friendly races on the local calendar.

Entries are taken at the clubhouse at Addison Park tonight or tomorrow before the start from 1 pm. Walkers are welcome in the event, which has a two-and-a-half hour cut-off. Brian Goddard has more details at 083 270 1976.

Later tomorrow afternoon Newcastle Harriers host the Spar Nite Half-Marathon and 10 km race, which is open to both runners and walkers.

The events start and finish at Ferrum swimming pool on the northwest side of the town. While the runners’ race commences at 5 pm, the walkers get a 30-minute head start at 4.30 pm. There is also a fun run for those looking for something shorter. Andre Grundlingh has more details at 083 653 2865.

The only race on Sunday is the Tongaat Sugar Coast Half-marathon, which joins with Boys Town to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

This has resulted in a change of race venue to the Boys Town campus in Genazena Road, which is just off the Watson Highway close to the Wesbrook end of the old M4 highway. Alternatively, the venue can be accessed off the M2 freeway at the Watson Highway Tollgate.

There will be half-marathon, 10 km and five kilometre fun run distances on offer, which will be considerably flatter than the old route from the centre of Tongaat. Those who complete the 10 km and half-marathon will receive T-shirts, while the fun-runners will get a medal.

Entries will be taken between 2 pm and 5 pm on Saturday, and from 4 am on Sunday. The race starts at 6 am. Basil Pillay has more details at 083 786 7535.

With the rugby Currie Cup final being held at King’s Park tomorrow, the scheduled Youth, Junior, Senior League has now been postponed until November 7.

The start is at 5.30 pm at the King’s Park Athletics Stadium. This event will be for all athletes older than 15 years and will also include masters athletics events.
