uMngeni staff hold protest

2013-05-29 00:00

UMNGENI Municipality workers yesterday locked the gates to the municipal building, blocked it with trucks and demanded to speak to the municipal manager. Police spokesperson Captain Lolly Moodley said it was a peaceful protest and no incidents were reported.

Two weeks ago, the SA Municipal Workers’ Union-affiliated workers submitted a list of grievances to the mayor and deputy mayor.

uMngeni municipal manager Mpilo Ngubane said all but two of the grievances had been resolved. These were the municipality’s failure to dismiss one official and its dismissal of a worker caught stealing petrol.

“We appointed an independent investigator, who invited the unions to submit evidence. They failed to do so, and, because of the lack of evidence, [the official] he was found not guilty,” said Ngubane. He said the unions had not attended the disciplinary hearing for the employee accused of theft, and had advised him not to attend it either. “He was found guilty and dismissed because he did not attend the hearing. Had he attended, there would have been a lighter sentence,” said Ngubane.
