uMvoti mayor, CFO on mystery visit to China

2009-09-02 00:00

UMVOTI Mayor Petros Ngubane and his chief financial officer, Sipho Ndabandaba, have flown to China accompanied by a Durban businessman on a trip that is being kept hush-hush.

Municipal manager Hamilton Shangase has denied all knowledge of such a trip. However, when it was confirmed by several reliable sources on Monday, he issued the following statement:

“In response to the numerous queries regarding the mayor being abroad; yes, he has left for China on August 29, 2009 with the chief financial officer, who had to attend due to his financial background.

“However, due to security reasons, the reason for the visit or any other flight details could not be disclosed and still cannot be disclosed at this stage. A full statement will be given once the mayor and chief financial officer return.”

Many residents of Greytown recall that in January 2002, the mayor, with four other mayors from the uMzinyathi district, went on a trip to China that cost Greytown ratepayers R86 418,75.

The mayor claimed that it was “worth it from the point of view of future development by Chinese investors” and on his return proudly announced that 20 companies had signed letters of intent to invest in uMvoti.

The trip has raised many questions regarding how the districts are being run.
