whoonga pair lucky to get off with a beating

2011-02-17 00:00

TWO suspected whoonga smokers are lucky to be alive after a mob threatened to kill them and burn down their homes, following a housebreaking incident at about 10 pm in France, outside Imbali, in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday night.

The two suspects (aged 20 and 21 years old) were “heavily” assaulted and forced to reveal where they had hidden the stolen goods.

Said a community member, Thamsanqa Mazibuko, “As they were being beaten up they led us to three houses where they had kept the goods. The cellphone, which they also stole, is still missing and they said they gave it to a drug dealer in exchange for whoonga and other drugs.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the suspects will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

“We appreciate this type of community policing. We [also] appreciate the fact that the suspects were not severely beaten even though the community used some force to subdue them,” she said.
