City Press is an English national Sunday paper of the RCP Media group and is sold weekly in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia.

Circulation: 195 150 (ABC Oct-Dec 2007)

Readership: 2.67 million

History
City Press was established in 1982 as Golden City Press and was the first national Sunday newspaper aimed at the Black market. The owners were Jim Bailey and the South African Associated Newspapers (SAAN). In 1983 the name of the publication was changed to City Press. When SAAN withdrew, Jim Bailey became the sole proprietor of City Press and the magazines Drum and True Love. In 1984 financial problems developed and only Nasionale Pers was willing to guarantee sufficient funds to help with the development of this publication. On 1 April 1984 Nasionale Pers took over City Press, Drum and True Love. A charter, confirming that journalists will still enjoy the same degree of freedom within the law, was signed between Nasionale Pers and these publications. Since 1 May 1999 City Press and Rapport, the other Sunday Newspaper of Naspers, have been published by RCP Media (a wholly owned subsidiary of Naspers).

City Press today
Today, City Press is the biggest English newspaper aimed at the Black market and the third biggest newspaper in the country with a circulation of 195 150 (Audit Bureau of Circulations, Oct-Dec 2007). The newspaper is distributed nationally as well as in our neighbouring countries, especially Botswana. Nearly half of the circulation is in Gauteng where most of City Press's readers are found. The newspaper has 2,67 million readers, of which 95% are black (AMPS 2007B).
