  • THE father of the nation, uTata Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela, turns 90 this year. It is an occasion for national celebration as we shower praises on a man who has come to represent the good in all of us as South Africans.

uTata, however, represents more than good South Africaness – he is a proud African and citizen of the world. So his turning 90 is celebrated throughout the world.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, tasked with safeguarding his legacy, is organising a number of activities to celebrate this complicated man and his life.

One of these is a series of six interviews titled In Conversation With. The interviews are with a group of people from different backgrounds about what Mandela represents.

City Press is honoured that the foundation has chosen this newspaper as the medium for these interviews, which will mark the intellectual part of the 90th birthday celebrations. The first, with respected academic Njabulo Ndebele, appears on this page.

City Press will publish these interviews each month, building up to the celebrations in July.

Make sure not to miss the series as the magnificent six reminisce about the life and meaning of uTata. – Mathatha Tsedu
