A FORMER police officer appeared before the Benoni Magistrates' Court on Tuesday May 13 for allegedly selling fake medical certificates for R30 each.

Edenvale's Sebenza police station spokesperson Constable Zenzile Murudi said they were alerted of the operation when employees of Avis Car Rental became suspicious when a large number of staff started booking off sick.

A Sebenza police investigation led to the arrest of the former police officer, who worked in one fo the security branches, for was selling the fraudulent medical certificate.

However, only one Avis employee was found to have bought the certificate from the former officer. He was also arrested and appeared in court with the former officer.

Murudi said the case against the two men was postponed until a later date for further investigation.

The doctor whose name appeared on the certificates was questioned about their validity and it was later proved the certificates were fraudulent, Murudi said.

She said more arrests were expected as police believe there is a master mind behind the fraudulent certificates.
