SAHRC calls for swift action in xenophobia cases
By Sonia Molema

THE SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has called for the government to fast track cases relating to attacks on foreigners.

This comes after charges against 19 people arrested in connection with the killing of two Zimbabwean nationals during alleged xenophobic attacks in Soshanguve, in Pretoria earlier this year, were withdrawn.

Brothers Singo and Innocent Sithole were killed during an alleged mob attack on foreigners in the squatter settlement of Plastic View in January.

Akasia police spokesperson Captain Lucas Sithole said the Pretoria Magistrates' Court withdrew charges of murder and public violence against the 19 accused because of lack of evidence.

Like many victims of xenophobic attacks the killing of the Sithole brothers became another forgotten chapter.

Commenting on the case, SAHRC spokesperson Vincent Moaga said: "Without violating people's rights to free trial, government needs to look into fast-tracking cases relating to attacks on foreigners."

Moaga said the commission is planning to host a summit to discuss issues related to xenophobia in order to find long-term solutions.
