Stop this carnage in Darfur
IQBAL JASSAT Media Review Network

  Print article
  email story

IT is impossible to ignore the compelling argument advanced in your editorial against the reign of terror in Sudan's Darfur region.

The tragedy unfolding in Darfur, which has already caused the mass displacement of close to a million people, can neither be justified nor supported.

The government of Sudan has to take responsibility for the enormous carnage which has resulted in unnecessary loss of life and mindless plunder.

And the political turmoil and social insecurity in the north-west, at a time when peace initiatives in the south look promising, makes it all the more imperative for the African Union to prevent the conflict from escalating.

While it may be true that Darfur is awash with weapons it is no reason to inflict pain and suffering on millions of fellow citizens.

It is therefore correct to castigate the perpetrators of this violence.
