The 5th avenue in New York is arguable the most expensive avenue in the world. The avenue extends from New York City and runs through to Harlem.

Harlem is more like Soweto in character. Of course Harlem is more advanced and far superior to Soweto. The similarity is only attributed to the fact that both are largely homes for urbanised black people. But recently Harlem is increasingly becoming whiter. White people are moving into Harlem and black people are moving out.

President Donald Trump once said that he could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and pull a gun and shoot a person right there. And then he said, that murder will mean nothing to his supporters and followers. His supporters will still go on voting for him. No matter what he does, people will still vote for him. "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters," he said.

Through his presidency Trump has taken decisions that tell you he does not care because he has people loyal to him.

His supporters are completely blind to his insane actions and waywardness. No matter how ridiculous Trump gets, they are still there — chanting, “Make America great again!”

A voter who will vote for someone no matter what is a dangerous voter in any society.

I would like to suggest that this particular sickness grades awfully high in the menu of toxins destroying the African continent.

Just last week Zimbabweans were clapping hands when President Robert Mugabe said that he will never go away, he will continue ruling Zimbabwe even though he is almost 100 years old in age. Zimbabweans were clapping their hands and appreciating the statement. They are loyal to the core.

What are the rests of hardened loyalty in both these cases? In America the result was loss of prestige and respect. Within a few months, America the great of Barack Obama has stooped so low that you cannot even recognise it anymore. Its reputation is in tatters – a laughing stock of the world.

In Zimbabwe the results of hardened loyalty has been multiplied and untold poverty and suffering, total collapse of the once thriving economy. Just complete darkness.

Loyalty and solidarity are worthy principles. They are principles at the heart of every organisation. They are required and demanded of any person operating within an organisation. But these principles have limits when they collide with higher principles.

Let me relay a few cases across the political spectrum when principles of loyalty and solidarity had to give way to higher principles.

Helen Zille as leader of the DA has done everything to ensure that Mmusi Maimane take over as the leader of the DA. There will not have been Mmusi Maimane without Helen Zille. We all know that. And by all means he is a grateful and devoted loyal protégé of Zille.

But when she, through a series of tweets made suggestions that touched on the worth and humanity of black people Maimane was driven to the verge of madness. He was confronted with the principles of loyalty and devotion to Zille and the much higher universal principles, the worth and dignity of the black race. What did he do?

He was driven to the verge of madness to an extent that DA policies did not matter to him. He collapsed them and went to the public and announced that Zille has been suspended.

Many people blamed Maimane for acting that irrationally, but I did not blame him.

The same can be said about the EFF. Many know how EFF has portrayed itself as distinctively African and at every turn had lambasted white people and DA as a white controlled party. Yet after the local government elections were concluded the EFF was confronted with legitimate principles of loyalty to race; should they vote ANC and allow ANC looting and incompetence, or act differently?

They succumbed to much higher principles, breaking through loyalty and solidarity to race. Loyalty and solidarity with the ANC was noble but yet ANC has ravaged and caused untold suffering, under development among black communities. They have made black poorer. The harm that the ANC has done to black people is going to be there for generations. Consider the poor state of education that wrecks the future of millions of black people for life.

The EFF did not want to partake in such evils in the name of loyalty and solidarity to race. They rose above race. They were principled.

Another example to cite is Dr Makhosi Khoza, an ANC MP from KwaZulu-Natal. She has been an ANC member since age 12 and has been quiet all the years – 100% bulletproof loyal to the core to the ANC.

But recently, in the midst of the events leading to the motion of no confidence in the president on 8 August 2017, she said: “I remain a loyal and informed member of the ANC”. “This time around if called upon to vote, I solemnly declare that I’ll vote for ANC survival and not ANC liquidation and moral authority enemy.”

ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu has stated the matter boldly that for any ANC MP to vote against President Zuma is absurd and hyper-ridiculous.

Zuma once challenged all of us to answer the question: Who came first, or rather, what should come first between the ANC and South Africa?

Well, there is an old Venda saying that says Lidoda Duvha. Lidoda Duvha is rich in meaning but simply means that there is a day coming that will profoundly and radically upset the balance of powers. Will Tuesday, 8 August 2017 be that day?
