A red-letter, and a dismal year

2004-12-15 13:34

As the sporting year winds down and we look forward to the beginning of the England cricket tour - there is plenty to reflect on.

It has been a red-letter year for South Africa in some aspects, while in others we have failed dismally on the sporting front. Without doubt the momentous occasion of the year goes to winning the 2010 bid.

I spent the day celebrating with friends in the sports industry thinking back to the disappointment of losing the previous bid. When they announced Deutchsland I was at Gallagher estate with the national team and some of soccer's high rollers. Total dejection, disappointment and disillusion.

This time round - total jubilation and chaos! The German Beer Fest that day saw thousands break out into the singing of the national anthem. Having been lucky enough to have been at two World Cup Finals - one in Italy, and the other in Japan, I am somewhat aware of the tidal wave of energy about to hit our shores.

Only five years to go I just hope we're ready. It's only five years to go, and if our soccer elite can get away from operation dribble, in-fighting, and corruption we'll be heading in the right direction.

Running a close second to winning the World Cup were our Paralympic Athletes who blew away the competition in Greece. The Team's prowess swelled our national pride, and created the same kind of vibe and energy that winning the Rugby World Cup and African Nations Cup did.

I take my hat off to the management, organisers and of course the competitors - who set the tone for other "boks" representing us on the sports field. If anything they have set up the model for success for our Olympic athletes, who unfortunately failed at the proverbial last hurdle? apart from the swim team - You Beauties!

Also top of my highlights list was the Tri-nations victory. We have been underdogs for so long, suffering the abuse of those uncouth Aussie and Kiwi commentators. It was a real treat to be able to turn the tables on these painful doubters. A well executed plan with great talent and commitment to each other (as Os Du Randt says).

What strikes me about each of these events is how buoyant the country becomes, when we are successful. Nobody wants to finish second, when you win silver; ultimately you've lost gold. And let's face it second sucks.

So here's to a 2005 filled with less scandal and wrangling, and more sporting moments to cherish for the rest of our lives. I am pretty confident that Smithy and the Boys can set that tone, and give the English a good spanking before they go home.
