Give peace a chance

It always fascinates me how vocal sports fans are about the ability of the supreme athletes they're watching.

At some stage everybody turns in to one of these crazed, deranged obsessive-compulsives, rooting for a team or player you want to win, for no other reason than you want them to win.

But what compels you to believe that the athlete, at the top of his game is trying to lose? Okay, I'll concede sometimes an athlete will conspire to topple him/herself, and capitulate in the heat of the battle. But why is it that South Africans are never convinced there team is trying hard enough?

Our cricket's in a little turmoil at the moment, funny how rugby's turned the tables on the darling of our sporting pride.

But come on - you think Smithy and his team are out there trying to lose? Puhlease!

You think the Boks tried to lose the Tri-Nations in as many unsuccessful seasons as Mike Tyson's had?

When you're playing at the top level, you've got to have an edge - after all, your opponents are as skilled if not better, and in today's ferocious sporting arena, winning is not about sheer talent.

It seems the conversation around the braai will never change though, whether it's Jake White trying too hard to appease, or Rudolf Streauli putting his troops - I mean players - through hell.

Sometimes selection sucks

All they're doing, is implementing what they think will turn them into winners. When they do - there methods were "magic, innovative, futuristic, first class", when they don't they just plain stink.

Which brings me back to the fans - the critics who would do it this way, and never leave such a talented player out of their team. Sometimes selection sucks - there is no better way to put it, and many will feel along the way that they were hard done by...

In pursuit of victory or to achieve our own goals we all make decisions that we can justify - and along the way we too will compromise and circumscribe (no that's not a religious cut).

But sports fans please - let's banter, trade our selections, talk our teams up, offer a solution - hell - write to the powers that be if you feel strongly about it.

Just do me this one thing - don't let your opinions boil over into a shower of empty bottles onto the field of play...
