Two major concerns

2004-11-16 09:19

I have two concerns this week.

1. What's preventing us from being the best in the world and

2. Our coastline?

The loss to the Irish on the weekend is not the end of the world, but it does irk me somewhat because it impacts upon our status as being the world's best.

What is preventing that from happening?

I read an excerpt from a book about Dutch football culture and how the 1978 World Cup has ruined the psyche of football forever in that country.

Even though they have the world's best, they cannot overcome the obstacles - take for instance the Euro 2000 that they blew.

But as for our guys - I can't put my finger on it. Are we too cocksure of ourselves - a couple of victories and there's nobody to touch us?

Do we lack the real confidence and belief to beat all the odds?

Why can't we have as my mate puts it "some living room joy" watching our Boks win the grand slam?

Granted, the Irish were better on the day, but they still won by a try that Hugh Bladen will forever call a "SHOCKER!"

I've left out the one reason that we can't be world beaters like the Aussies - maybe there's a conspiracy to undo us - particularly where the match officials are concerned?

Attacks spell trouble for surfing

With regards to our coastline, Monday's fatal shark attack in Fish Hoek has me deeply concerned.

The incidences on our coastline have increased dramatically in the last two years, and this spells trouble for another major sport in the country - surfing.

I don't want to exclude paddleskiers, bodyboarders and general bathers, but anyone using the water for competitive and recreational purposes is at risk it seems.

Holidaymakers may well be frightened by the events that saw JP Andrew lose his leg and Monday's fatal attack.

The question is, why a sudden surge of incidents? Some experts say there are two reasons, the chumming for the shark cage diving and obviously the fishermen.

While fingers cannot be pointed and blame apportioned it is truly worrying that a country that has produced some of the world's top contenders on the WQS, not to mention Heather Clark on the pro women's circuit, is under siege.

And the ultimate question is... what do we do now?
