All I want for 2005 is...

2004-12-10 09:49

I thought I'd get my wish list for 2005 in early this year - it's been a pretty eventful year for the entertainment industry. The phenomenon of the celebrity has hit us big time!

In no specific order:

No doubt, the event of the 2005 social calendar will be the Elton John Cape Town Ball. Tickets are a few G's - but it's all for a good cause, the Elton John Aids Foundation and their Aids projects in South Africa.

No, it's not to finance the Briton's wardrobe. It's an event similar to what Sir Elton hosts at his private residence in the UK each year - The White Tie & Tiara Ball. Those who crack an invite are a lucky few!

Acting lessons for the entire cast of Backstage. Please!!! I beg someone! The part that doesn't make sense is that this soapie is one of the most watched programmes on e.tv. Go figure.

While on the subject of soapies, please can we stop bringing back soaps which look like they were hauled out of a deep dark storeroom. Why do they insist on broadcasting programmes like Passions? The tannies must love it!

Would Vanessa Carriera please get a job? As quoted by another celeb, she 'attends the opening of an envelop.' She obviously doesn't have anything else to do with her life.

For those who have tried to work with her, she is extremely unprofessional in my opinion! She should shape up - perhaps then she'll be regarded as more than just one of the many ex-Miss South Africa's as her claim to fame.

Gwen Gill 'should make some friends'

I do wish Gwen Gill would make some friends. I admire the women for not being afraid to make enemies, but there is a limit. Perhaps that's what the Sunday Times wants. I'll admit, I've never been courageous enough to chat to her at events, but she seems like a nice old lady!

Reality shows are soooo passé. Would some TV producer please come up with a new idea to keep us entertained?! Big Brother, the Block, the Apprentice - ya, they are entertaining when there is nothing else on the box. Can you imagine what trash is out there if reality is the best the channels can buy.

What ever happened to Mike Joubert (Managing Director of Levi Strauss South Africa)? He was scattered all over the social pages last year and he seems to have vanished this year.

Perhaps his PR company aren't making sure his invited to the right places? A great addition to any dinner table or party, I'd like to see the man back on the scene!

With our hunger for celebs, does this mean we are trying to make people to have every small claim to fame, famous? Every cover girl seems to be newsworthy. What for? Who knows?

Models are born with their face, or then at least they've paid a lot of money to get theirs. Actors have talent, singers have talent, models have...

I can't wait for the day a celebrity is not afraid to be his for herself, like the late Brenda Fassie. As one of South Africa's true diva's - she won't be forgotten.

Is Bobby still with Top Billing?

I'm not sure if Bobby Skinstad is still with Top Billing - I hope he is not. If ever there was a worst ever presenter award for the show, he would scoop the award. Stick to what you know best.

Would e.tv please grace Romy Titus with a better scriptwriter? The questions she asks people, who many journalist can only dream of, are nothing less than dumb.

I'd like to see that she's more than a pretty face, eye candy for the guys to keep them watching the show after each commercial break.

Lastly, almost as an institution in South Africa - one of the country's most unrecognised celebs, - the host of Noort for Noort.

Sorry, I don't know his name, but no-one can say that they've never watched the show and been amazed at the contestants knowing all those songs (most of which I've never heard).

He always has the genuine smile and enjoys what he does. What's his name again?

He's definitely not every South Africa's top celeb, but has a place in some type of history book.

With the celeb boom lifting off this year, next year is sure to be a great ride! Here's to fame to those who deserve it!
