Ordinary person, famous partner

2005-03-18 12:51

Most girls would love to be Brad Pitt's girlfriend (who's Jennifer?). Just imagine: instead of watching the Oscars in your pyjamas on the E Entertainment channel, you could be walking the red carpet in a gorgeous gown, next to him.

Rather than write about celebs who are coupling up, I've decided, this week, to focus on relationships where one partner is in the public eye, and the other is not.

When girls go from being "ordinary", to Tom Cruise's girlfriend (only wearing make-up when going out, always powdering their noses even to buy a loaf of bread), it puts a totally different spin on the relationship.

Are you the type who growls back at any girl who makes eye contact with your man? Well, just imagine what Arno's fiancé, the one who is going to marry him, must go through when he is on stage!

Elana Afrika says that she doesn't even see herself as a celeb.

And her boyfriend, Rudy, who she has been seeing for four years, doesn't seem to mind the attention at all - that's just the way things are.

"Look at all those people who recognise you", he'll point out. She says that some people come up to her and kiss her thinking that they know her more personally than they really do.

A stranger kissing your girlfriend - that would mean some sort of infliction of pain to some boyfriends!

Lucky, lucky girls

Next on my list to chat to was Tamarin Kaplan, the lucky girl who is Colin Moss's girlfriend.

The couple have been together for eight months, although they've known each other for five years.

She says that at times she does feel like the public is the extra person in the relationship, but when they aren't out, things are totally normal, and he's "just good ol' Col".

Colin appreciates that she's not jealous and trusts him completely. She knows that girls ogle him while she's not around, but there's no hint of jealousy. Instead, there's an awareness to what he'll be encountering.

When she's around though, the fans still seem to ignore her, and while chatting, Colin will reach and find her hand to hold... how sweet and thoughtful.

Their relationship is strong, based on love and trust, and the ogling has no consequence.

Where does the pressure lie, however? Tamarin is a recently graduated, up-and-coming director who is looking to establish herself.

Being from the same industry doesn't seem to help this girl who wants to stand on her own two feet. She doesn't want to be known as being nothing more than Colin Moss's girlfriend.

I've said this before, but when in a high-profile relationship, it's almost as if the public is the third leg.

So going public with one's relationship is a huge step.

Their first public appearance was at the heat Charity Auction and Colin did warn her that they were about to cross a line in their relationship. She didn't realise how hectic it would be until it really happened.

But when they're alone, she forgets he's famous. So, being the partner of someone famous is no big deal, really - apart from the fact that to fall asleep next to a Brad Pitt must be quite nice.
