You are a moron

2013-07-15 08:49

Chris Moerdyk

I am deadly serious. You, yes you, reading this now, you're a moron.

I am also a moron. So is every member of my family and yours.

And the reason we are morons is because governments have decided that we are.

True, they haven't actually said it in so many words but the inference is clear.

And the reason for this is because governments believe that there are lots of things ordinary people like you and me should not know about. Especially things that governments would be very embarrassed to admit to doing.

Just take the US government and Edward Snowden as well as Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

No transparency

And our own government with, among a multitude of other things, the Nkandlagate saga and reasons behind the recent Cabinet shuffle.

These and all the other so-called democratic governments on earth claim to be servants of the people and at election time they all promise to conduct "honest and transparent" administrations.

Well, surprise, surprise, it turns out there is nothing transparent about our government or those in the USA and just about every democracy on earth. They're all as bad as some of the worst dictatorships.

And despite all the election promises, they all have laws which allow them to keep things secret.

OK, I can understand that certain things have to be kept secret such as anything to do with terrorism.

But, most of what Snowden and Assange leaked had little with terrorism or the protection of the public, but everything to do with dirty diplomatic tricks, spying on allies and so forth.

In exactly the same way, our government wanted to keep things like Nkanlagate quiet.

A classic case of embarrassing things that governments do and don't want the public to find out about.

Quite how the USA can justify spying on the UK and European countries is beyond me. In fact, they can’t explain it. So, they just classify it all as top secret and turn people like Assange and Snowden into criminals.

Dirty dealing

It's happening in South Africa as well with new legislation being planned to make all sorts of potentially embarrassing things top secret.

National interest, like hell. It's just plain political dirty dealing.

People such as Jacob Zuma and Barack Obama seem to have forgotten that they are in power because the people put them there. They work for us, not the other way round.

I don't suppose they will take any notice of me and any others who write stuff like this because after all, we are just morons.

But, what makes some of us really stupid morons is that we keep voting these people back into power.

I am quite sure that behind their gratuitous smiles, politicians must be laughing all the way to their banks about how incredibly naive we all are.
