Cyril in the hot seat

I think that my opinion of Zuma’s entire second term (and probably most of his first (and if you really want to get down to it, his entire time in government)) can be summed up in three words: “waiting for Ramaphosa”.

But even without Ramaphosa actually taking on the title of “Prez”, it seems he’s doing a lot more “in da house” than his soon-to-be predecessor. Take his recent stint in the hot seat in parliament where he actually answered questions (oh yes he did). Was a man ever more steeped in presidentialness while simultaneously being accessible and chatty?

Stuff Cyril says

Take this delightful snippet: “I even said to the Eskom managers, ‘even if you have to go and sleep at the door of the power station, do that!’ because we want the energy provision in our country to be resolved.”

Go, Cyril!

Of course, he also said some things that I disagree with, like saying, “What we don’t need is whinging and whining.”

Or “What we need is people who will come forward and say, ‘We want you to strengthen your hand. We want you to be strong and we want you to take action to resolve the problems that beset the country.’”

Actually, I completely agree with the last bit, but I think we can still be permitted the odd whinge and whine.

Time will tell

The thing is, since Ramaphosa started talking, it has begun to feel like the light at the end of the tunnel might actually be electricity, and not a burning candle. He has said that Unit 6 of Medupi will be producing 800MW of power by the end of June 2015. That’s a promising and not-very-far-away milestone.

He could be full of empty promises, and he’s only the spokesperson for a very messed up situation, but for now, I’m buying what he’s selling.

I also like that the guy is independently wealthy and a shrewd businessman to boot. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Since Ramaphosa has been appointed to be the pointsman on the Eskom debacle, this will be a good measure of the man.

He speaks accessibly, he speaks authoritatively, he speaks credibly. But does he speak honestly? Only time will tell, but I’m holding thumbs.
