Erect a statue for Jacob Zuma

We should erect a statue for President Jacob Zuma.

Somewhere prominent. In front of the Union Buildings or on Church Square. Or sommer next to his swimming pool at Nkandla.

Yes, you heard me correctly.

The day Zuma finally goes (whether voluntarily or not) I propose that we, the people of South Africa, erect a beautiful statue of him to show our gratitude. Gratitude, not only because he will finally be gone; gratitude, because despite all of his failings as a human being and gross overall incompetence he has during his term of office done one thing right.

He has achieved a goal that no other South African leader has ever achieved.

He managed, single-handedly, to perform a task so noble and so seemingly impossible (and, might I add, so desperately urgent) that had it not been for him our country would sure as hell not have made it through another decade.

This noble goal, this mammoth task, this grandiose dream has eluded South African leaders for decades. So far, only Nelson Mandela got close to achieving it. But even he did not fix the problem permanently.

Neither did Mbeki, nor Verwoerd, nor Simon van der Stel or anyone else.

Of all the great leaders this country had ever had, it was only Zuma who managed to turn this vision into reality. Unintentionally, of course.

But what does it matter what his intentions were, as long as he got it right?

Yes! Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma managed to get this one thing right. He succeeded magnificently where others had failed. He completed, all on his own, the almost Herculean task of saving South Africa. Yes, Jacob Zuma saved us.

He united us as a nation. He drew us together from every walk of life, from different political persuasions, from so many diverse cultural groupings. He brought us together as South Africans, black and white and brown and pink and yellow and he made us speak from one mouth. He made us stand together. He helped us find a consensus that had never before existed.

I am grateful towards Zuma. I am proud of my president.

Before President Jacob Zuma, we were a divided people.

Now, at last, we stand together.

We are united in our hatred of him.

Finally the DA, the EFF and almost all opposition parties, even many members of the government, not to mention the SACP and several trade unions, together with the ANC veterans, civil society, and even big business, are all in agreement that South Africa would be a better place without Zuma.

Because of this shared hatred, we have become a proper nation - a country where we all want the same thing.

We are committed to a future without him.

We want Zuma to go!

Wow! Isn’t that something?

Of course he deserves a statue.

He deserves a statue because had it not been for him we would never have realised that South Africa would be better off without him.

Before Zuma became president, we were a bunch of dissidents. We did not get on with one another. We had no common purpose, no Big Picture, no road map, no moral high ground, no patience with one another. We were all over the place. No-one agreed about anything.

Now at last we have a common purpose. Finally the way forward is clear. We know what must be done.

We must get rid of Zuma.

Yes. It’s actually as simple as that.

For this amazing insight, for this flash of inspiration, for this great and powerful and brilliant idea, we owe him our gratitude.

Give this man a Bell’s!

Erect a statue for this man.

And then, send him home.

The sooner, the better.
