Nairobi - Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki on Saturday released almost 7 000 prisoners as the east African nation marked its 41st anniversary of independence from Britain.
"I am announcing today the release of 6 946 prisoners who were convicted of petty offences or were to serve sentences not exceeding six months and are of good conduct," Kibaki told thousands of Kenyans in Nairobi.
"Kenya is a great country. I am proud to be a Kenyan.
"Let us all be proud of who we are and put our country first for our common good," Kibaki added.
The celebrations were attended by former president Daniel arap Moi, who retired in December 2002.
