United Nations - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan on Friday congratulated Burundi on its first successful presidential vote under a regionally backed peace deal, a spokesman said.
Hutu ex-rebel leader Pierre Nkurunziza was elected with a mandate to unify the tiny central African nation torn by decades of ethnic strife and 12 years of civil war.
"The secretary general congratulates the Burundian people on the election today of the first post-transitional president in Burundi," Anna's spokesperson said in a statement.
"He would like to wish the president-elect every success as he faces the challenging tasks ahead, including continuing on the path of major reforms, consolidation of peace, national reconciliation, reconstruction and development."
